Newcastle United vs Liverpool Result

Liverpool maintained their assault on the top of the Premier League as they defeated Newcastle 1-0 in a tightly-contested affair at St. James' Park.

The Reds' manager Jurgen Klopp made five changes to the side that overcame Villarreal midweek, with both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah dropped to the bench.

It was the hosts who made a brighter start to the game as they forced Liverpool into a number of early mistakes with their relentless press.

But the Reds took the lead when Naby Keita danced into the Newcastle penalty area and rounded keeper Martin Dubravka before firing into an empty net.

Eddie Howe's side thought that they had equalised in the second half when Miguel Almiron scrambled the ball past Alisson, but it was ruled out for an offiside in the build-up.

After a nervy end, Liverpool were able to hold on and seal the win to move two points above Manchester City - who face Leeds at Elland Road this evening.

Liverpool win! A professional, if profligate, performance from the new league leaders.
